Posted on: August 25, 2011

When you own a trailer, travel is a breeze. Your only limitations are your time and imagination. Did you know there is a place right here in the continental Unites States that you can dig for diamonds? It is the only place in the world where you can dig for diamonds and keep what you find.

Crater of Diamonds State Park
Tucked neatly away in the mountains of Arkansas, Crater of Diamonds State Park is a beautiful place to visit. While the diamond field is nothing more than a huge dirt patch, nearby highway 278 offers a scenic view. If you have a toy hauler trailer and some motorcycles, pack them up and head to Arkansas. This is a can't-miss view.

Nearby RV Parks
The state park does have campgrounds, but as of April 2010 it is closed for renovations. However, just six miles away is another RV park located at the turn off point on 301. If you'd prefer to stay at state parks, then just 25 minutes away is Daisy State Park. Wherever you stay, call ahead to make sure they have room for your trailer.

Hours of Operations
Crater of Diamonds state park is open year round. They are closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Most of the year, the park is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, they are open to 8:00 p.m. on Labor Day weekend and from May 25-August 19.

Tips on Digging for Diamonds
Everyone should expect to get dirty. Even on the dry days when the field is not muddy, you can except to be covered in dirt. After a rain, you are tromping through a mud patch and should definitely wear mud boots.

To find diamonds you have three options:

  • Walking - You can walk around the field looking for diamonds lying on top. This method actually works and people do find them this way.
  • Dry Sifting - This method has you dig in the dirt and sift through it with a screen. You can rent a sifter for a small fee plus a deposit or you can bring your own gear.
  • Wet Sifting - This method involves you digging up dirt and taking it over the wet table to sift through. Again, you can rent the equipment or bring your own.
  • No Power Tools - The only rule is you cannot bring anything with a motor, batteries or otherwise mechanical.

Digging for diamonds is just one of many things you can do with a trailer. Travel is easy and fun. So pack up your travel trailer and head for Arkansas.
